Falsi Amici – Eventually vs Eventualmente

Eventually in English means “In the end” or “at the end”.

In Italian, Eventualmente means:

Nel caso:
In case (in the event of something happening)

Se mai:
Should ever (something happen)

Eventualmente is a good word to use to avoid committing oneself completely to doing something, as it usually makes a course of action conditional to a certain event occurring first, ie we use it to say we’ll do something but only in the event that something else happens.

Esempio:

Sono sicura che andrà tutto bene e non avremo bisogno di te. Eventualmente ti telefono

I’m sure everything will be ok and we won’t need you.
In case (of any problems) I’ll ring you
